Arm in a Sling? Your Brain Knows & Compensates (LiveScience.com)

An injured arm can do more than throw a person off balance, it can also change the brain. A new study shows that when a person has a cast or sling on their dominant hand, brain areas responsible for compensating for the injured side bulk up.

The researchers also saw decreases in the size of brain areas furloughed because of the cast.

Researchers studied 10 right-handed people who had injured their upper right arm and had to wear a cast or sling for at least 14 days, restricting that hand to little or no movement during that time period. Because of the slings, the participants had to use their nondominant left hand for all daily activities, such as using a toothbrush, eating or writing.

None of the study participants had a brain injury, nerve injury or psychiatric disease. Researchers took magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the subjects' brains to measure the amount of gray and white matter in the brain within two days of the injury and then 16 days after they began wearing the sling. The researchers also tested the participants' motor skills, including their arm-hand and wrist-finger movements.

The MRI scans revealed a decrease of up to 10 percent in the amount of gray and white matter in the left side of the brain ? the side of the brain responsible for the movement of the restricted right hand. However, the amount of gray and white matter in the right side of the brain increased in size, according to the findings.

"We also saw improved motor skills in the left, non-injured hand, which directly related to an increase in thickness in the right side of the brain," study researcher Nicolas Langer of the University of Zurich, Switzerland, said in a statement. "These structural changes in the brain are associated with skill transfer from the right hand to the left hand."

The study's findings may be applied to better understand or adjust rehabilitation therapy for people who have suffered strokes or other illnesses or injuries that affect one side of the body, according to the researchers.

"One type of therapy [for stroke victims] restrains the unaffected, or 'good,' arm to strengthen the affected arm and help the brain learn new pathways," Langer said. "This study shows that there are both positive and negative effects of this type of treatment."

The researchers noted that the study did not look at whether the decreases in the amount of gray and white matter in the left side of the brain would be permanent, or if the brain matter would return to its previous size once the cast came off and the injured arm began to be used again.

"Further studies should examine whether using a restraint for stroke patients is really a necessity for improving arm and hand movement," Langer said. "Our results also support the current trauma surgery guidelines stating that an injured arm or leg should be immobilized 'as short as possible, as long as necessary.'"

The study will be published in the Jan. 17 issue of the journal Neurology.

CyanogenMod 9 Music app now available, theme engine is a go

CM9 Music

CyanogenMod 9 Music is now available for download, and you don't even have to be running CM to install or use it.  It offers a level of customization you won't find in other music apps, from things like searching the Android Market music store for the currently playing song, gestures for audio controls, sharing the current track with any of your social media outlets, and even setting your favorite song as a ringtone with one button.  To top it all off, the app has a theme engine that changes just about every aspect of the look.  A "Google Music" style theme is available, as is a theme template for you artistic types to have at it.

To get the app, follow the link below.  We have to mention that this one only works for music you have stored on your device itself, as it doesn't hook into any streaming or cloud service.  Andrew Neal, the developer of CM Music, says we'll see it in the Android Market shortly, as well as see it in CyanogenMod 9.  This is one to have a look at guys and gals.

Snowshoer found alive on Mount Rainier

A 66-year-old snowshoer who was missing on Mount Rainier since Saturday was found alive Monday afternoon by a team of three rescuers, a national park spokeswoman said.

Yong Chun Kim, of Tacoma, Wash., was alert and conscious, and was cold but otherwise in stable condition, park spokeswoman Lee Taylor said. Rescuers were working to bring in a Sno-Cat snow vehicle to carry him out because weather conditions prevented a helicopter from landing in the area, she said.

"As soon as we heard he was alive, my sister, his wife, praised God and said 'Hallelujah'," Kim's sister-in-law, Sang Soon Tomyn told The Associated Press after learning from relatives that Kim had been found. "We were so worried. We prayed every day."

She said her brother-in-law was a strong hiker, had food in his backpack and knew the area very well, so they prayed he would be all right.

"He's a very strong person," she said.

Kim was leading a group on a snowshoe hike on the mountain when he slid down a slope and became separated from his party. He radioed to the group twice to say he was OK. But when he failed to meet up with them in the parking lot, a search was launched Saturday afternoon.

Teams of park rangers, search dogs and volunteers had been combing a snowy area of Mount Rainier for the third straight day on Monday. Rescuers found him in the upper Stevens Creek basin, Taylor said. Weather conditions prevented a helicopter from joining the search.

Kim, who has been snowshoeing for a decade, was well equipped for a day of snowshoeing but did not have overnight gear. Temperatures dropped into the teens and eight inches of new snow fell in some areas since Saturday, with more snow forecasted in coming days. With winds whipping on the mountain, some areas saw as much as 30 inches of snow.

Kim was leading a group of 16 members of a hiking club on a snowshoe hike in the Paradise area, a popular high-elevation destination on the mountain's southwest flank, about a 100-mile drive south from Seattle.

He was still in contact with other members of his hiking club after his slide but decided not to try to climb back up the slope. "He yelled or gestured he would hook back up" farther down the trail, Taylor said.

"He radioed twice and said he was on his way in," she said.

Because Kim was the leader of his group, other members of his group weren't initially able to accurately describe where he had slipped, Taylor said.

It wasn't until Sunday afternoon that a member of the group was able to better pinpoint where Kim had fallen. Searchers had initially believed Kim fell in a different area, based on initial descriptions from the group, Taylor said.

"We're so thankful for the community and for everyone who was willing to volunteer" to help find him," Tomyn said. "It's dangerous rescue work. But we really appreciate it."

China denounces U.S. sanctions on company dealing with (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China criticized U.S. sanctions on a Chinese company selling refined petroleum products to Iran, calling Washington's punishment an unreasonable step beyond international sanctions on Tehran's nuclear program.

Thursday, the Obama administration invoked U.S. law to sanction China's state-run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp, which it said was Iran's largest supplier of refined petroleum products.

"Imposing sanctions on a Chinese company based on a domestic (U.S.) law is totally unreasonable, and does not conform to the spirit or content of U.N. Security Council resolutions about the Iran nuclear issue," the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said in a statement issued on the ministry's website (www.mfa.gov.cn) late Saturday.

"China expresses its strong dissatisfaction and adamant opposition," said Liu.

The Obama administration said its sanctions against the Chinese company and two other firms are part of a broadening effort to target Iran's energy sector and press Tehran to curb its nuclear ambitions, which Western governments say appear aimed at developing the means to make atomic weapons.

Iran says its nuclear activities are legitimate and entirely for peaceful ends.

The U.S. sanctions threat is a worry for China, the biggest buyer of Iranian oil, followed by India and Japan. Only Saudi Arabia and Angola sell more crude than Iran to China.

As a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, China can veto resolutions mandating sanctions. But Beijing has voted for them, while working to ensure its energy ties are not threatened.

China has, however, also long criticized the United States and EU for imposing separate, unilateral sanctions on Iran and said they should take no steps reaching beyond the U.N. resolutions.

"Like many other countries, China and Iran maintain normal energy and trade and economic cooperation," said the foreign ministry spokesman Liu.

Analysts have said the U.S. move was largely symbolic, given that China's Zhuhai Zhenrong was unlikely to have much U.S. business, but that it sent a warning to Beijing and its state-run oil giants such as China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), China Petroleum and Chemical Corp (Sinopec Corp) and China National Offshore Oil Corp..

These companies have invested billions of dollars in the U.S. energy sector, and are much more exposed to the impact of potential sanctions.

Palestinian Sesame Street ails without US funds (AP)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? It's quiet time on Palestinian Sesame Street.

The iconic children's program, known as "Sharaa Simsim" in Arabic, has been put on hold for the 2012 season because of a funding freeze by the U.S. Congress.

Sharaa Simsim is one of many U.S.-funded Palestinian programs suffering after Congress froze the transfer of nearly $200 million to the U.S. Agency for International Development in October. The suspension aimed to punish the Palestinians for appealing to the United Nations for statehood.

The funding suspension ? affecting hospitals, education, and government ministries that all rely on American aid ? is breeding resentment and frustration in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, even among the most progressive organizations.

In the Ramallah offices of Sharaa Simsim on Thursday, the writing workshop room was empty and the set was closed.

"If we had funding, we would be writing scripts, we would be reviewing scripts, we would be hiring filmmakers to produce the videos," said executive producer Daoud Kuttab.

Even as the freeze put Palestinian Sesame Street on hold, the State Department is investing $750,000 in the Israeli version of the show, which is now filming its newest season with an emphasis on teaching children the value of fairness.

Danny Labin, an executive at the Israeli TV channel that co-produces Israeli Sesame Street, called the funding halt to the Palestinian show "extremely unfortunate."

"Young children, whether Israeli or Palestinian, who are in need of educational tools to foster diversity appreciation and to prepare for life in a pluralistic society, should not be penalized or held accountable to the politics and political leadership, over which they have no control," Labin said.

Sharaa Simsim, the Palestinian show, debuted in 1996 and has produced five seasons since, with long intermissions for fundraising. It has promoted a message of peace and tolerance that Israeli critics say is often missing from Palestinian airwaves. The main characters Haneen, a red-headed orange muppet, and the green rooster Kareem have became household names for Palestinian children.

Sharaa Simsim is one of about two dozen international shows produced by the Sesame Workshop Staff, the parent company of the American show. Others are aired in Israel, Egypt, Russia and South Africa. In each country, the New York-based Sesame Street staff consults with the local production teams to create a unique cast and content.

Kuttab said production takes months. At the beginning of each season, Palestinian educators and child psychologists work with the Education Ministry to craft themes and curriculum. Then writers draft the episodes, with occasional review from New York. Filmed in Ramallah and airing on Palestinian national television, each 20-minute episode is half Palestinian content and half American footage.

Sharaa Simsim was supposed to begin this process in October, but Kuttab said the show won't be able to air in 2012.

"Every month we are behind schedule it actually means two or three months down the line," he said. "If we don't do the curriculum workshop we can't do the scriptwriting. If we don't do the scriptwriting we can't do the filming, and there are actors who have their own schedules."

From 2008-2011, USAID gave $2.5 million to the program, covering nearly the entire budget, Kuttab said.

USAID was scheduled to issue another $2.5 million grant to Sharaa Simsim last until 2014, Kuttab said. But in early October, Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Republican, placed holds on $192 million in funding to USAID for programs in the West Bank and Gaza.

She said this was in reaction to the Palestinian's appeal to the U.N. to admit the Palestinians as a full member state. The U.S., Israel and others oppose the move, saying a Palestinian state can only come about through negotiations.

Congress restored $40 million of the funding in December but it's doubtful any will go to the show. Many programs are clamoring for funding, including healthcare and humanitarian projects, said a USAID official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of ongoing Congressional debates.

Bradley Goehner, spokesman for Ros-Lehtinen, did not say if the intention was to cut Palestinian Sesame Street and other programs, or if more USAID funding would be restored.

"It is a matter that continues to be discussed with the administration and pertinent members," Goehner wrote by email.

American opposition to the Palestinian bid raised hackles in the West Bank, ruled by the Western-backed Palestinian Authority. Days after the USAID funding hold, Palestinian protesters hurled a shoe at an American diplomatic convoy in Ramallah.

Nasser Abdul Karim, an economist at Birzeit University in the West Bank, said the freeze hurt Washington's image and will push Palestinian groups to diversify their funding.

"Because of the U.S. support of the Israeli agenda, (Palestinians) look at American aid with a lot of suspicion," Abdul Karim said.

The U.S. donates more than $500 million a year to the Palestinians, including funds for security forces, the government's operating budget and USAID programs.

Kuttab said he is using some last-minute funding from the Palestinian Authority to tape small-scale children's programs. Core staff are working on reduced salaries, and freelancers are off the payroll.

In the meantime, the show's muppets have been sent to New York for repairs.

Sesame Workshop in New York confirmed the Palestinian show is on hold. Spokeswoman Beatrice Chow said Sesame hopes USAID will resume its support.

Since it was founded, Sharaa Simsim has reflected the region's political ups and downs.

In the first season, muppets from Israeli and Palestinian programs visited each other on TV. After the outbreak of the second Palestinian uprising in 2000, the cooperation crumbled.

USAID backed out of funding after the Hamas militant group won Palestinian elections in 2006, and Kuttab scrambled to create a mini season with funding from Holland and small organizations.

Actor Rajai Sandouka, who plays the rooster Kareem, said he is working as a freelance actor in theaters and as a drama teacher while he waits for the latest freeze to be lifted. He said kids recognize his voice when he is on stage, even when he plays other characters.

"A lot of people are asking about me," said Sandouka, 50, from east Jerusalem.

Fish oil during pregnancy does not protect against excessive adipose tissue development, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Jan. 4, 2012) ? Is obesity in infants "programmed" in the womb? Previously, researchers assumed that consumption of "bad" fats during pregnancy contribute to excessive infant adipose tissue growth and that "good" Omega 3 fatty acids prevent expansive adipose tissue development. An intervention study run by the Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM) showed no evidence to support this "perinatal programming" theory. Expectant mothers increased their intake of Omega 3 fatty acids with fish oil capsules and fish-based meals during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This intervention diet did not have any discernable effect on the fat mass of the offspring. At 12 months, the babies were as rotund or slim as the children in the control group.

Obesity has become a global epidemic with more and more younger children affected by the overweight trend. According to the Robert Koch Institute, 15 percent of children aged between 3 and 17 are overweight. With serious consequences -- childhood obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and also increases the chances of developing coronary heart disease or cancer in adult life. Nutritional experts are therefore keen to find effective prevention methods. "Efforts to control weight gain and obesity should target the earliest possible stages of development," says Professor Hauner, Head of the Else Kr?ner-Fresenius Centre for Nutritional Medicine at TUM.

To achieve that, Prof. Hauner decided to research early adipose tissue growth. In their INFAT study, Hauner and his colleagues, explored how the composition of fatty acids in the mother's diet during pregnancy and lactation affected the offspring. The research focused in particular on the ratio between Omega 6 fatty acids -- present in meats, cold cuts and sausages -- and Omega 3 fatty acids -- concentrated in oily saltwater fish in particular. The team hypothesized that decreasing this ratio in the mother's diet was a promising way of preventing infant obesity. Cell culture and mouse studies had shown that arachidonic acid -- an Omega 6 fatty acid -- resulted in increased adipogenesis and growth of fat mass in offspring. Experiments with Omega 3 fatty acids, however, revealed a curbing effect on adipose tissue growth among mice offspring.

The results of the INFAT study challenge the validity of this "lean" perinatal programming theory. Hauner and his researchers closely observed and monitored 208 expectant mothers from the start of their pregnancies. One group increased its intake of Omega 3 fatty acids by taking fish oil capsules and reducing meat-based meals during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The control group maintained its usual diet and refrained from taking fish oil capsules. In both groups, skinfold thickness (SFT) measurements were used to estimate infant adipose tissue growth at regular intervals up until the age of 12 months. For the first time in infants of this age, ultrasound was also used to measure the fat layer at defined sites over the abdomen. The results show no difference in infant adipose tissue growth between the two groups. This study thus refutes the perinatal programming theory. The INFAT study thus revealed no evidence to support the effectiveness of fish oil capsules during pregnancy as a way to control excessive weight gain in infants.

So how seriously can we take claims that food supplements increase intelligence, protect against allergies and help avoid obesity? "Many of the claims associated with food supplements should be treated with caution," continues Hauner. "Prenatal development is a complex process that cannot be reduced to a simple correlation between nutrient intake and fat mass growth. There are a number of additional, environmental factors and mechanisms that influence body weight -- for instance in daycare or at school." Hence the INFAT study will continue to monitor the children at regular intervals until they reach the age of five. The team now plans to explore other assumptions surrounding the beneficial properties of Omega 3 fatty acids -- in relation, for example, to protection against asthma or neurodermatitis. INFAT is the first prospective, dietary intervention study to provide a rich data set to explore these assumptions.

The INFAT study (The impact of nutritional fatty acids during pregnancy and lactation on early human adipose tissue development) is sponsored by the German Ministry of Education and Research (through the competence network on obesity), the European Union (EARNEST consortium), the Danone Research Center, the Else Kr?ner-Fresenius Trust and the Unilever Foundation.

Eli throws 3 TDs, N.Y. defense sacks Romo five times in 30-14

By TOM CANAVAN

updated 11:30 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2012

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Thanks to Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, an all-or-nothing game was all New York Giants and nothing but frustration for the Dallas Cowboys.

Manning threw three touchdown passes, including a 74-yarder to Cruz early, and the Giants claimed the final spot in the NFL playoffs, beating the Cowboys 31-14 on Sunday night to win the NFC East.

"I knew we were going to fight and keep playing until the end, I feel good about the way we're handling the ups and downs, and it comes down to finishing," Manning said after throwing for 346 yards and no interceptions.

New York (9-7) won three of its final four games for 65-year-old coach Tom Coughlin and earned a wild-card home game next Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons (10-6).

"We've had a lot of ups and down, but when our team needed it most we responded," said the up-and-coming Cruz, who has capped his team-record setting season with six catches for 178 yards. "We were able to keep level-headed when we were on the four-game skid."

The Cowboys (8-8) lost four of their final five games in their first full season under coach Jason Garrett.

Dallas was its own worst enemy in a game with the season on the line. They missed tackles on all three of the Giants' three first-half touchdowns, failed to recover two fumbles within their grasp in the half and failed to convert on a Tony Romo sneak on fourth-and-1 at the Giants 10 while trailing 21-7.

"It's extremely painful and it's a damn shame," Jones said. "We have a good team and I thought we would be going to the playoffs, but that didn't happen. We have to be able to take some of the good with the bad and move on. We did a lot of good things this year, but to point to one thing why this happened would be subjective. We're 8-8 and we have to be better than that."

Romo, who played with a bruised right hand, moved the Cowboys in the second half but all he could generate were touchdown passes of 34 and 6 yards to Laurent Robinson, the last one getting Dallas within a 21-14 with 10:15 to play.

Cruz, however, had a 44-yard third-down catch and another for 20 yards to set up a 28-yard Lawrence Tynes' field goal and Manning iced the game with a 4-yard TD pass to Hakeem Nicks with 3:41 to play.

Manning finished 24 of 33 for 346 yards and no interceptions as the Giants beat the Cowboys for the second time in four games and ended a regular season marked by inconsistency on a high note. Cruz, who set a single-season record for yards receiving, finished with six catches for 178 yards, a 29.7 yard average, and of course, he did his touchdown salsa after the first score.

Romo was 29 of 37 for 289 yards but he was sacked six times, including twice by Osi Umenyiora who returned to the lineup for the first time since spraining an ankle late last month. Dallas' final possession ended with Romo being sacked by Justin Tuck and losing a fumble.

"We needed this win," Umenyiora said. "This is the biggest win we've been a part of for a while."

The Giants haven't won a playoff game since beating the-then unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2008, and the one thing that is apparent is that this team is peaking.

Coming off a 29-14 win over the rival Jets last week in what might have been the Giants best game of the season, Coughlin's team put together another outstanding 30 minutes in jumping to a 21-0 halftime lead.

Cruz, who sparked the win over the Jets' with a team-record 99-yard touchdown, made another monster play on the Giants' second offensive series, turning a short pass into points.

Cruz caught a short square out, eluded a tackle by Terence Newman, turned the corner after getting a seal block from Nicks and outraced two defenders down the sideline in front of the Giants bench for a 7-0 lead.

Dallas went three-and-out but had a chance to get right back into the game when Will Blackmon muffed a punt at near his 30-yard line and Alan Ball failed to recover.

Manning made Dallas pay. Manning hit Nicks for 18 yards and Devin Thomas for 14 en route on a 68-yard yard drive that Bradshaw capped with his 5-yard run. Safety Abram Elam had a chance to tackle Bradshaw in the backfield and Bradshaw scooted into the end zone after he missed.

Manning had passes of 14 and 12 yards to rookie fullback Henry Hynoski in an 80-yard touchdown drive just before the half. Bradshaw, who had a 29-yard run early in the drive, broke a tackle by linebacker Bradie James in scoring on a 10-yard swing pass for a 21-0 lead.

The Giants had chances to put the game away in the third quarter. They moved to the Dallas 42 on the opening possession of the second half and elected to punt.

Romo then drove the Cowboys 94 yards with a no-huddle offense, hitting Robinson on a 34-yard go pattern down the right sideline on a play that cornerback Corey Webster was beaten.

An interception by safety Antrel Rolle gave New York the ball in Dallas territory but they failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at the Dallas 35 and the Cowboys came right back to cut the deficit to seven.

University of Oregon Wins Rose Bowl 45-38 | ?Looking Good While At It Too?

University of Oregon Wins Rose Bowl 45 38 | Looking Good While At It Too

There are college football bowl games and then there is the Rose Bowl, the Granddaddy of Them All. Played continuously since 1916, its the oldest college football bowl game. While it does not necessary pit the # 1 team against the # 2, it usually serves as a point of convergence for a team from the Big Ten and the Pac-12. This year?s Rose Bowl served another purpose ? a place of redemption for University of Oregon Ducks. Looking to end a Rose Bowl losing streak some 94 years after its win against University of Pennsylvania in 1917, the Ducks went into yesterday?s game with University of Wisconsin Badgers prepared. However, the most notable (and the most commented) aspect of the Rose Bowl wasn?t the gameplay. It was the mirror finish on Ducks? helmets. Created as part of the new integrated uniform system from Nike Pro Combat by Nike Football, the helmet features wings laminated in a LiquidMetal black finish, giving it a polished mirror appearance. The look certainly has Notre Dame?s golden helmets a run for its money. See the Ducks? new uniform in action in the recap after the click below, courtesy of Yahoo! Sports.

QUICK HITS: Florida 24, Ohio State 17

Posted by?Adam Jacobi

FLORIDA WON. The Florida Gators used two special teams touchdowns to break the Gator Bowl open, and Ohio State's late rally wasn't enough to bring the Buckeyes back in a 24-17 Florida victory. Andre Debose, seen at right, was named Gator Bowl MVP after he?took a kickoff 99 yards to the house, and fellow Florida speedster Chris Hainey?later blocked a punt that was returned 15 yards for a touchdown.

HOW FLORIDA WON: As mentioned before, Florida made big plays on special teams that turned the tide of this game, but it should also be noted that the reason OSU only scored 17 points was that Florida effectively bottled up Braxton Miller on the ground. Miller led the Buckeyes with 15 rushes, but he was only able to get 20 yards total on the ground, and Florida's six sacks on defense were a huge part of that. Ohio State depends heavily on its run game, so when Florida held that ground game to under four yards a pop, half the Gators' work toward getting the W was done.

WHEN FLORIDA WON: The Gators had held a healthy lead for most of the game, but Braxton Miller found Jordan Hall on a swing pass late in the 4th quarter, and about five jukes later, Hall was in the end zone and OSU was within seven points with under a minute left. Alas, Drew Basil's onside kick found its way into the arms of Florida WR Stephen Alli, and that would be all.

WHAT FLORIDA WON: If nothing else, it was enjoyable to see an SEC team win the way SEC teams win: SPEEEEEEEEEED. What Florida did not do, however, is move the ball reliably and turn first downs into scoring drives with any regularity. Florida avoids its first losing season in over 30 years with the win, and Will Muschamp has a bowl win over the Big Ten's historical powerhouse on his resume already, so although six-loss seasons aren't going to be tolerated in Gainesville for very long, this is at least a high note for the Gators to end on and to keep the mood at Florida congenial -- for now.

WHAT OHIO STATE LOST: This isn't goodbye for interim head coach Luke Fickell, who's going to be the co-defensive coordinator for Urban Meyer next year, but this was his swan song as Ohio State's head coach, and if anybody deserved to be carried off the field on the team's shoulders this year, it was Fickell. This wasn't a good Ohio State team. Urban Meyer wouldn't have been able to get more than seven or eight wins out of it. So for Fickell to just go out as a sub-.500 head coach at the end of the year would unfairly obscure the work he did.?

THAT WAS CRAZY: In the first quarter, Ohio State knocked the ball out of Florida QB John Brantley's hands as he was passing it. The ball bounced and hit OSU LB Ryan Shazier, who tried to recover it, but his effort was unsuccessful and shortly thereafter the officials blew the play dead as an incomplete pass before anybody else recovered the ball. The play was sent to further review... at which point the replay official awarded the ball to Ohio State for recovering the ball. The fumble was a good call; the recovery was not. Fortunately for Florida, OSU did not convert the turnover into points.

FINAL GRADE: D. This wasn't much like the Ohio State team we'll see next year, thanks to the impending arrival of Urban Meyer.?So a game featuring three total offensive touchdowns, two limited offensive performances, one play's worth of end-game drama (a failed onside kick, at that), and zero lead changes isn't exactly going to be exciting. Bah.

"Merkozy" play leads in beloved German New Year skit (Reuters)

BERLIN (Reuters) ? A skit of "Dinner for One," the British vaudeville comedy sketch so loved in Germany it holds cult status and is screened every New Year's Eve, with Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy as "Miss Sophie" and her bumbling butler, has become an Internet smash.

In the black and white original, filmed in 1963, Miss Sophie celebrates her 90th birthday with four imaginary guests as butler James darts around the table, pretending to be each of them and downing their drinks, becoming increasingly inebriated in the process.

The skit, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8kj4JBf-W0, made for German broadcaster ARD and titled "The 90th euro rescue summit or euros for no one," has the heads of the German chancellor and French president superimposed over the original actors.

This time the imaginary dinner companions include former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Sarkozy pretends to be Cameron, as Merkel toasts him and tells him: "Don't forget we speak German in Europe."

"You are looking younger than ever," "Cameron" starts in English, then switches to German and says: "You are looking richer than ever."

As Sarkozy continues to scurry around the elegantly set table, the narrators sighs, explaining: "This is what happens every euro rescue summit, whether or not anyone else is there, it is just these two doing everything themselves."

The original will be shown seven times by different German television stations on New Year's Eve. Its popularity in Germany and Scandinavia has made it one of the world's most repeated television shows, but it is hardly known in Britain.

Its euphemistic closing line - when James asks whether it will be "the same procedure as last year," as he escorts Miss Sophie upstairs to bed, then promises to do "his very best" - has become a catchphrase in Germany.

At that point in the skit, which has had almost 200,000 views on the Internet, Sarkozy, whose country's top sovereign credit rating is at risk, tells Merkel he will give her his "triple A."

Iranian border guards still in Pakistani custody (AP)

QUETTA, Pakistan ? Pakistani authorities have yet to decide what to do with three Iranian border guards detained for allegedly crossing into southwestern Pakistan and killing a man, a government official said Monday.

The incident occurred Sunday in the Mazah Sar area of Baluchistan province, a desolate, unpopulated region where the border is not clearly marked. They allegedly shot and killed one man and wounded another who local authorities said were smugglers.

Aalam Farez, a senior government official in Washuk district, where Mazah Sar is located, said the Iranians have admitted to inadvertently crossing into Pakistan while chasing a vehicle.

They accidentally shot the two men when they fired on the vehicle they were chasing, said Farez. The two men were in another vehicle.

Pakistani border personnel then chased the Iranians back across the border, seized the two men who had been shot and detained the three Iranian guards, Pakistani officials have said.

Farez said he was waiting to hear from Baluchistan's provincial government about what to do with the Iranians.

Iran has not publicly commented on the incident.

Lillian Daniel: Acting Out on the Airplane: A New Year's Reflection on Patience

Even before the flight took off, we knew who would be offering our in-flight entertainment. The man in the seat in front of me began by taking out a ballpoint pen, putting it into his mouth and then taking a dramatic inhale. "You probably all think that I am smoking," he announced. "But I want to assure you that this is not a real cigarette, it is actually a sophisticated medical device that I use instead of smoking."

"That's not a medical device," his seatmate muttered to her friend. "It's just a pen."

Well, that set him off. For the rest of the flight he was ranting, turning around in his seat to beat in time to the music on his headrest, lecturing the invisible politicians he believed were accompanying him on the plane ride, and spilling strong drinks.

Finally a flight attendant came and sat next to him, calming him with a cup of water, gentle words, listening skills and the kind of thoughtful diplomacy that we could really use in Congress these days.

At the end of the flight, two police officers put the inebriated man in a wheelchair and whisked him away. As a student of human nature (another word for "nosy") I followed them to see what happened, as did another man who began to ask questions of the police.

"Do you know this guy?" they finally asked him.

You could see the man hesitate for just a minute before saying, "Yes, I work with him. We're going to the same meeting."

"Can you look after him?" they asked.

Again, another long pause, and then, "Yes, I can help get him to the hotel."

Jesus once said that our family members are not just the ones we share a family tree with, but he never said it would always be tidy and reciprocal.

Tomorrow that guy may not even remember who rescued him and took care of him the night before. So I want to make a note in his family tree: On one sad night, a hard-working flight attendant and an exhausted work colleague both claimed him as a brother, whether he remembers it or not.

As the new year approaches, I pray for patience with the other members of God's family, and the love to consider them my own family as well.

And for all the times I have been the sister or brother no one wanted to claim, I thank God for being patient with me.

Speaking of Crystals, check out the Specs on Times Square?s New Year?s Eve Ball

Ball Dropping tomorrow in Times Square said to have more lights this year yet is more energy efficient

At the beginning of this week, my article on the science of Snow Crystals was published here on the Guest Blog. If you haven?t read it yet, you can check it out here. This weekend millions of eyes will be focused on another type of crystal.

In honor of New Year?s Eve, let?s switch gears from checking out crystals made by nature (snowflakes) and focus our attention on the spectacular Waterford crystals and lights adorning the Ball that will be dropping to mark the end of 2011 in NYC.

The tradition of the Ball dropping in New York?s Times Square dates back to 1907. The first ball used was made of iron and wood and had only 120 25W light bulbs on it, but check out?

?THE SPECS on this year?s ball:

BIG: The Geodesic sphere is 12 feet in diameter and weighs in at 11, 875 pounds. That is about ?the length of an average SUV? and ?the weight of four compact cars,? according Lighting Science Group Design Works who did the ball?s most recent makeover in 2008.

BRIGHT: 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles of various sizes, some with intricately carved facets, shapes and motifs with different themes like joy, love and friendship.

MORE COLORFUL THAN EVER: This year?s ball has 32,256 Philips Luxeon LEDs (three times more than last year). Philips Lighting says that its red, green, white and blue LED modules help to create a color palette of over 16 million colors and billions of color patterns.

MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT than last year: According to the Times Square Alliance?s website this year?s ball is ?10-20% more energy efficient than last year?s already energy-efficient Ball, consuming only the same amount of energy per hour as it would take to operate two traditional home ovens.?

So since it has been sort of a mild winter and we haven?t had a chance to see snow crystals drop from the New York City sky yet, we will at least be able to see that exquisitely luminous ball of white and colored crystals drop this Saturday night. And now you know some of the specs and science behind it. The science hidden in plain sight. Happy New Years, everyone!
